In Junior High, teachers provide curriculum in an online platform, but learning still takes place in a classroom setting. Teachers employ a combination of digital and hands-on class activities to help students engage with the course content and help them develop soft skills.

Tech is age appropriate. Students switch from using iPads to laptops as they begin to conduct more research and spend more time typing.

Remote junior high students can actively participate in synchronous class activities with their on-campus peers when they cannot attend school through Microsoft Teams.

Students can access recordings of all class periods. This allows students to review material and receive all the information they missed if they are absent from class.

Saxon Math begins in grade 6 and moves to a fully Web-based, online curriculum. Math is structured so that students can repeat a grade if necessary and still be ready for Algebra 1 by 9th grade.

They can also advance if they are gifted in math and enter senior high with high school math courses already in progress. This allows those students to take advanced courses at Vernon College in their junior and senior high school years.

Junior high students are taught with a systematic writing program that explicitly helps students organize their thoughts so they can focus on the hard work of analysis and creativity.

Students learn the hard work of critical literature analysis, preparing them for the rigors of high school reading.

A strong emphasis on grammar allows our students to consistently score in the 90 percentile on our standardized testing in the spring.

Teachers have been trained by the English department in writing techniques, and components of the systematic writing program are reinforced across all subjects.

Science in grades 6, 7, and 8 integrates life, physical, and Earth science through the academic year using a multi-modal curriculum including written text, hands on labs, virtual labs, and digital lessons. There is a strong emphasis on data and experimentation. Students are encouraged to learn more about themselves, explore and discover the world around them, and begin building independence and self-discipline.  

Grade 6 Focus: introduction to science and technology, space science, and the human body 

Grade 7 Focus: introduction to forces, motions and fields, Earth’s water and atmosphere, and the human body

Grade 8 Focus: geologic processes and history, cells and heredity, waves and their applications, and energy and energy transfer

Bible becomes more academic and students are encouraged to struggle with the big questions of living the Christian life. Bible is taught as a course, but a biblical worldview is infused into all content areas through the use of our schoolwide overarching essential question: How does (what we are learning) show us about man’s fall and the struggle to find redemption and restoration? This question is phrased for each grade level.

The purpose of junior high STEAM courses is to allow students to try and experiment with various courses that they might not otherwise try on their own.

All students take a year of robotics, model rocketry, and 3D modeling over the course of junior high.

All students take a semester of studio and digital art each year.

All students take a foreign language course from Rosetta Stone each year.
